help john see

Postby johnthehuman » Tue Mar 17, 2020 8:52 am

LU is focused guiding for seeing there is no real, inherent 'self' - what do you understand by this?
That we are under an illusion: we believe there is someone experiencing life. That there is someone in control. That there is someone, namely John, typing this. I move my body. I feel things. That I think my thoughts. I can think happy thoughts. I can think sad thoughts.

In reality there is no I. There is no one experiencing life.

What are you looking for at LU?
To go from an intellectual to experiential understand of no self. I desire to do this because this is a great mystery of life. Wise people say most of us live in a dream world. They say you can get out of it. I want to get out of it. I want to see what's really there.

What do you expect from a guided conversation?
Fast responses (USA timezone would be great). Experience. Clarity in direction. Patience when I do not understand.

My intention is to work with the guide to navigate my experience to help me to completely drop the belief that I am a separate self.

What is your experience in terms of spiritual practices, seeking and inquiry?
Started seeking without knowing I was seeking 3 years ago. Began a daily mindfulness sitting practice. After my second silent retreat this winter I realized that I am seeking. Began inquiry about 1 month ago.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how willing are you to question any currently held beliefs about 'self?
10

Hi John. :)
My name is Bananafish, one of the guides here.

I read that you want fast responses; I'm fast in responding, as I'm
currently working from home under the influence of COVID-19 spread.

I'm in JST timezone, and it's almost 4:30 AM here.

Would this be ok for you?
If so, let's begin the conversation.

Warm regards,

Bananafish

Hi John. :) Glad to hear that!

And thanks for the good-health wish.
I wish yours. too.

Ok, let's start now.

First, please restate what you really want out of this conversation.

You wrote in your intro that you want to "go from an intellectual to experiential
understand of no self." Is that your primary goal, i.e., the end in itself?
Or, is it rather a means to an end?

What do you expect when you experientially know that there is
no self?

Best wishes,

Bananafish

What I really want out of this conversation is to be 100% sure that I do not believe there is a separate self.

Why do I want this?

I want this because that view is true. It's how life really is.

Why do I want that?

I don't think it's going to solve my problems.
In part I do want it so I will feel like I was a successful seeker.

I want it because I'm curious. People say you're operating under an illusion.. that there's a more true approach to life. I'm curious to know what that is.

I guess if people said the more true approach was worse, I wouldn't be curious.. but my understanding is that it doesn't make life worse, and in most cases it can make life slightly better.

I can go on, but I'm not sure how much is helpful.

Hi again. :)

John, could you condense what you wrote in your previous post
in one or two sentences?

What I really want out of this conversation is to be confident I've transcended the illusion the illusion of the self so my seeking will end and I can began the process of deepening this new understanding.

Right now the self is felt as the one who hears the thoughts flying through my mind, and then creates the next thoughts based on the ones it hears.

Let's do something funny out of what you wrote previously;

"Thought hears the thoughts flying through my mind, and then creates the next thoughts based on the ones that thought hears."

How do you feel reading this?
And what is "my mind"?

first read: very confused. Asking myself, "does this make sense"?
second read: confident it doesn't make any sense.

my mind = what is responsible for the creation of the thoughts and the hearing of the thoughts.

Ok, please tell how you perceive the moment mind creates thoughts.

Do you actually see some kind of entity called mind creating thoughts, as if
a car is created in a car factory?

interesting question..

I don't see some kind of entity producing the thoughts. It seems to be a feeling in my head. A feeling (sense?) that I'm the one in my head producing and listening to the thoughts.

I'm having a hard time finding an answer I'm confident with.
