How does the butt chair looking relate to the feeling of no separate self?
You are simply looking at 1 sensation: the sensation of not being separate.

This is the only exercise I was given when I was guided here. I did nothing else for 3 months.

If you get bored, listen to these. Start with the Introduction.

Hi Stacy,
So I'm going to ask you to keep doing butt chair for a few more days before we go on to anything else.

Tell me how it FEELS to see that there is no separate self.
Based on that statement, I was waiting for you to get back to me “in a few days”. I’m also listened to part of the”I am” meditations which are terrific.
There is realization of the absence of separation in the butt chair experience when no labels or concepts interfere with raw sensation.
I intellectually see the analogy to the sense of self, that is that without labels, concepts or thoughts, it cannot be found by direct perception.
Yet on arriving at that intellectual understanding, I don’t seem to have shifted to less thought/concepts and more direct perception relying on the mystery to make things happen (or maybe I am a little).
Thank you,
Larry

Good morning

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'd like you to post your experience & feelings each time you do the ButtChair pointer or one of the IAM pointers. Hopefully, daily.

Watch for a shift in perception. It may be subtle.

This will probably not result in "less thoughts. " You just won't believe the content, what they say.

Have you read Gateless Gatecrashers? You can download it here. It has examples.

Hi Stacy,
Sorry I wasn't clear. I'd like you to post your experience & feelings each time you do the ButtChair pointer or one of the IAM pointers. Hopefully, daily.
So as I was walking up a small hill to get to work, I asked myself, “How does the ButtChair experience relate to my direct experience now.” As I stripped the labels and concepts away, I became aware that I was having sensations appearing in space. I was not obviously creating or directing them. I was also seeing around me, but no thoughts arising were directing the sensations or pointing them in any direction. It was all just happening. I felt something similar to this when I reflected on the ButtChair while eating. Trying not to be too histrionic, it was as if I was an invisible man and movement, sensation, seeing, and tasting were all happening in space - but not in a ”Larry”.
I always worry that my mind is trying to trick me into thinking I am making progress when I am just fooling myself, but the analogy and experience seemed rational.
What do you think?
Thank you,
Larry

Hi Larry,

I think that "thinking" is highly overrated!
it was as if I was an invisible man and movement, sensation, seeing, and tasting were all happening in space - but not in a ”Larry”.
YES!!! How did it FEEL for that to be your observation of Direct Experience?

Dear Stacy,
YES!!! How did it FEEL for that to be your observation of Direct Experience?
There was so little sensation of tenseness. There was little thought arising. There did not seem to be any need for thought at the time.
It was quiet in a way.
It felt good.
Thank you,
Larry

Good! You expressed some doubt. That happens sometimes.

Can you now say 100% there's no separate "self?" Can you see that it's only a story that thoughts tell?

Keep LOOKING. Apply ButtChair as you did on your c walk.

Dear Stacy,
Can you now say 100% there's no separate "self?" Can you see that it's only a story that thoughts tell?
I have continued to explore this. Doing more walking today, I relaxed my thinking so I could just experience my senses. I noticed sensations of movement, images, smells with no attachment to thought. Also, life seems brighter in the senses as thought receded in volume of arising thoughts and inattention to content.
Can I say I am at 100%? No. Yet I am further than ever before. I also caught thought arising to describe a plan that had started already!
Thank you,
Larry

Good Larry. It sounds like you *are* SEEING but you're stuck in doubt.

Pernille has 3 videos on that.

https://youtu.be/a_8N331jpA4?si=wHE8KmhO7n9uwLPp

We have a pointer for walks. See if these help.

Nature Exercise

Go out into nature and spend some time watching the movement of the whole. See how clouds move, trees swing, leaves wiggle, grass moves, insects, birds - all move all the time.

Then move focus to sensations and see how they too are in constant motion, thoughts come and go, sounds, colours, sensations come and go.

Notice that everything is part of one movement.

Then close your eyes and see if there is a line between you and out there, between you and life itself.

If yes, where is the boundary?

Is there an inside and an outside of Life?

Is there something which is not included in the movement of the whole?

Is there a witness that is watching life happening from a distance?

Is witnessing part of the one movement too?

Is there anything which is not just happening?

Go out, come back and tell me what you found.

Dear Stacy,
Pernille has 3 videos on that.
I am listening to the video the link directed me to. It is very relevant indeed. She talks about internal and skeptical doubt. I am glad she says it doesn’t really matter which one!
I am resonating with her challenge!
Thank you!
The link does not lead me to the other 2 videos (or I am just not finding them 😞). Would you tell me the other 2 you want me to try? She has a “doubt” grouping of 23 videos. Perhaps I need them all 🤔.
With great appreciation,
Larry
